Final discussions at the CEN Workshop Agreement on Sustainable Roads
On 22 and 23 September, the CEN Workshop on “Indicators for the sustainability assessment of roads” held last meeting in Leiden (Netherlands).
For the last 10 months, a group of road stakeholders with different backgrounds (i.e. road public administrations, road materials manufactures, construction companies or research organizations) has been participating in the discussions to identify which would be the most convenient sustainable indicators in order to elaborate the final list.
The CWA discussions have been following current CEN standards and ongoing discussions at various TCs. In this sense, the construction sector is committed to achieve more sustainable goals during the entire lifetime from extraction of raw materials to end-of-use of the road.
The list agreed by the experts will define indicators to be used during the road construction operations. However, it will not include any methodologies or threshold values for assessment of roads. In addition, the document will cover only pavement materials to be used and will have a voluntary basis. Final document is expected to be published before the end of the year.
