Life Cycle Engineering approach to develop a novel EU-harmonized sustainability certification system for cost-effective, safer and greener road infrastructures

LCE4ROADS public consultation running until 2nd August 2016

A public consultation has been launched after the CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) agreed on a pre-standardization document at the second CEN Workshop on the Sustainability Assessment of Roads Committee in Brussels, Belgium on 3rd March 2016 for road specialists from various EU member states. This CWA proposes a common set of indicators to be used in road sustainability assessment, which refer to pavement materials (concrete and asphalt) and is in the process of getting approved by the CEN Technical Committee (TC) 350. A meeting has already been scheduled on 22nd-23rd September in the Netherlands to agree a final document after this public consultation period ends on 2nd August. The kick off meeting of the CWA took place in the Madrid Headquarters of the Spanish Association of Standardization and Certification, AENOR, in Madrid, Spain on 14th December 2015. The scope of this group is to produce a common set of indicators to assess sustainability of new and existing roads. With the attendance of 24 experts from Road Administrations, research centers, construction companies, industrial associations or environmental experts, the kick off meeting assessed the first draft of the indicators to assess the sustainability of roads. Stakeholders interested in the project can contact the Secretariat: Aitor Aragón (AENOR): aaragon@aenor.es.
